Welcome to Kaito's PentaLavaloon Guide for Town Hall 9!
Army Composition
• 20 max level balloons (balloons are too weak for 3-starring unless they are max level)
• 4 lava hounds (this strategy can work with level 1 hounds, but of course, level 2 is better)
• Max lava hound in clan castle (the cc hound should be max level, you will need a level 5 clan castle to hold one)
Spells
• 4 rage spells
• 1 poison spell
Update: Now that you can take a dark spell in the clan castle, you can take two poison spells, which is capable of killing any air targeting cc troop (poison spells don't stack, use one after the other). What this means is that you don't have to use your archer queen to kill dragons anymore! Woohoo! If you already know what is in the enemy clan castle and you know it is not a threat to air troops (if there is a lava hound in the cc, for example), you can take a haste in your clan castle instead of a second poison. I still like to take the first poison to reduce the amount of damage the enemy archer queen does before she dies.
Finding the Right Base to Attack
What to look for:
Bases that include these features are vulnerable to pentalavaloon, however, a base can be 3-starred by pentalavaloon even if it does not include these features.
• Symmetrical base design
• X-bows set to ground target
• Easy to lure clan castle
• Archer queen outside of walls
• If the archer queen is not outside of the walls, she should be very close to an air defense
What to avoid:
• Unable to lure clan castle (attempting a pentalavaloon attack without luring and killing the clan castle will almost always result in a failed attack)
• Overlapping air defenses (if all of the air defenses are in range of each other, your hounds will die too fast)
Phase 1
The two biggest threats to any 3-star attack strategy are the enemy clan castle and enemy archer queen. That is why the first phase of the attack is luring and killing the clan castle. You will have to use some of your balloons to lure the clan castle, usually it takes 2 or 3. To be as efficient as possible, you should try to kill an air targeting defense with those balloons because it will be one less defense you have to worry about later in the attack. If you can kill the clan castle troops using the poison spell, then that is what you should do. If there is something like a dragon in the clan castle, then you will have to bring it to the edge of the map and kill it with your archer queen. You can still use the poison spell to help your queen kill the dragon if you want, or you can save the poison spell for phase 2. If there are only ground targeting troops in the clan castle, they will not come out and it may seem like the balloons failed to lure it. Before attacking, check the range of the clan castle to know for sure if the balloons will be close enough to lure or not. Of course, ground targeting troops are no threat to pentalavaloon and if you know beforehand that there are ground targeting troops in the clan castle, you can just skip the lure. If the enemy archer queen is outside of the walls, that makes things easy because you can kill her in phase 1 as well. Just put your barbarian king next to her and use his iron fist ability.
Phase 2
Before you start your attack, you should analyze the base and decide which direction you want to attack from. You want to make sure that when you send in your first four lava hounds, two of them go to one air defense and the other two go to an adjacent air defense. If the enemy archer queen did not die in phase 1 then she has to be next to one of the two air defenses you are targeting first. It is also important to keep in mind which air defenses the hounds will go to after the first two are destroyed. You have to make sure that the hounds stay in pairs and do not clump up. If all four hounds end up on a single air defense while there are other air defenses still in the base, your balloons will not be fully protected. When you send in the first four hounds, spread them out a little bit so they pick up any air bombs that might otherwise target your balloons. Send all of your balloons behind the first four hounds. Just like you don't want the hounds to clump up, you also don’t want the balloons clumping up too much, or they will be very slow taking down defenses. The balloons should be spread out along one side of the base.
The enemy archer queen is like a walking air defense. If she is left alive, she will snipe all of your balloons before you can get 3 stars. Unless you killed the queen in phase 1, now is when you have to kill her. If you saved the poison spell, then you can use it now on the enemy queen to decrease her attack speed. Before the first hounds are about to die, place one rage spell on each of the first two air defenses. These first rage spells are not for the balloons, they are for the lava pups when your first two lava hounds die. This is the reason you want the enemy queen to be close to an air defense. The lava pups will automatically target the queen and the rage spells will help the pups kill her quickly.
The next two rage spells are for your balloons. After the first two air defenses are down and your army is heading towards the next half of the base, place the next two rage spells to speed up your balloons so they can take out those last air defenses. You should have been saving your last lava hound in your clan castle and now is the time to use it. By this point in the attack, most of your hounds have probably died and your balloons will need a little more support to finish off the base. Place your last hound at one of the last two air defenses before the balloons get in range. This last hound will only be able to protect the balloons from one of the air defenses so you should use it where it is needed most.
After all of the defenses are destroyed, the only thing standing between you and 3 stars is the clock. The lava pups will be your main cleanup crew. Lava hounds do almost no damage and if for some reason they did not die and turn into lava pups, you might run out of time before they can clean up the rest of the buildings. If you have not yet used your heroes, then you can use them now and they can help speed the cleanup process.
I know this is a lot of information. If you don't succeed on your first try, don't worry about it. Learning a new attack strategy takes practice.
Also, because watching the attack is probably more helpful than reading about it, below is a link to the YouTube playlist where I learned Pentalavaloon. Good luck!
